The Aboriginal Family Violence Prevention and Legal Service
Victoria (FVPLS Victoria) has received funding from the Commonwealth
Attorney-General’s Department, the Department of Families,
Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, the Victorian
Department of Human Services and Department of Justice Indigenous
Issues Unit to conduct well-being workshops for young Koori
women around Victoria.
The Sisters Day Out workshops have gained widespread
support from Victorian Aboriginal communities and from the
many workshop participants who have attended as is shown
in the narrative view
and a short video below.
The cultural aspects of the Sisters Day Out workshops are
integral to strengthening the role Koori women have in relation
to family and community. The workshops build on self-esteem
and identity, which reinforce women’s entitlement to
feel safe and secure in their roles as nurturers and leaders
in the community.
The workshops have been based on general themes and well-being
activities (including personal presentation, health care)
in which are imbedded the provision of practical and accessible
information, support and referral networks. The workshops
are occasions when legal, health and related information can
be provided in an informal and interactive format with an
emphasis on creating culturally safe, affirming and confidential
A snapshot of the feedback from participants of the Sisters
Day Out workshops gives an indication of their success so
" Today has been very good for the girls in
our community and has made people feel good about themselves

and different age groups. Brings communities together,
we have had enough of community violence "
" Fantastic day out, power to the sisters "
" Fabulously pink and welcoming!! "
" Today’s session was pleasurable and
informative, I came away feeling satisfied that there
is help available and not so isolated "
" It made me realise I have more sistas than
before. Women of the community are very strong. "
" Knowledge is the key - when we get the correct
information it empowers us. "
